Once the goals – and specific content — for a particular ETPD session or program are selected, create the plan that will determine how the professional development will be offered. One way to do this is to select among, then combine, instructional models according to participants’ needs, preferences, and contextual/logistical considerations. There are 20 different ETPD models, classified into 5 general types, according to the kinds of professional learning that characterizes each:

Instructor-organized sessions (6 models)

Individualized learning (4 models)

  • Unassisted independent exploration
  • Assisted exploration
  • Individualized learning plan
  • Prescribed and managed instruction

Collaborative learning (5 models)

  • Classroom visits
  • Mentoring
  • Peer coaching
  • Sharing best practices
  • Lesson study

Data-based inquiry (3 models)

  • Independent action research
  • Action research done collaboratively with other teachers
  • Action research assisted by external researchers

Development of materials & approaches (2 models)

  • Collaborative materials creation
  • Materials and approaches developed individually
